Sometimes it can be hard to know if your carpet needs a professional cleaning, or a skip… Below is our quick guide to help you know the difference.
Carpet, especially on stairs can carry a lot of heavy traffic and become dirty quick. Like most things in your home with dirt and grime comes the perception of age. Many of our customers are surprised at how carpets that they had considered throwing out, came up like new after our cleaning.
Worn or worn out?
Small rips and tears in a carpet can be repaired quite easily. However, if the tear is large or there are significant gaps where the carpet fibres are missing with the underlay exposed, it’s best to consider buying a new carpet. Also, if the padding underneath the carpet begins to wrinkle or gets damaged, professional carpet cleaning won’t help this and the whole carpet will need to be replaced.
The type of carpet you buy is important when it comes to longevity. Carpets made from polyester tend to wear more quickly as opposed to ones made from nylon. That said, it’s all about the individual quality of the carpet, so make sure to do your homework before buying.
The ten-year itch
Carpets usually start to look worn between 8-10 years. If after ten years your carpet is not looking it’s best, even after being professional cleaned and well cared for, then it’s time to go shopping for a new one.
Renew have an excellent reputation at removing even the most stubborn stains such as ink and red wine. Our advanced technology and highly skilled technicians have successfully removed even old, worn-in stains.
It’s always best to have a protective treatment applied after any professional carpet cleaning. This will help to build a barrier to prevent future staining and make it easier for you to maintain.
Biological stains such as pet urine, vomit and faeces are not as straight forward. If these occur regularly or have built up over time they can cause mould and mildew. Although these stains can be successfully removed professionally, if they are left they can become a health hazard and the whole carpet really should go. Better safe than sorry!
When DIY goes bad
Some people try to take on stains themselves by concocting potions and scrubbing at their carpets. These experiments can permanently damage carpet fibres, and will in turn mean the carpets need replacing.
